National Mural Symposium 2011 is a professional development opportunity for mural artists, arts administrators, arts educators, public art consultants and creative developers of community space.

This year's symposium "The Big Picture" looks up at the Monumental Murals of keynote speaker Charlie Johnston, then out to Singapore's social initiative mural projects with guest speaker Faris Basharahil from Social Creatives.

Please note, the National Mural Symposium will not be located at a hotel this year. Symposium registrants can select from a large range of accommodation in Toronto.

Program highlights:

  • Monumental Murals – a presentation by keynote speaker,
    Charlie Johnston, C5 Artworks. Charlie is one of Canada’s acclaimed muralists whose work is monumental in scale and his legacy of murals graces the walls of many towns and cities in Canada and the USA. 
  • Social Enterprises for Murals - a model for innovation and sustainable mural projects, featuring special guest, Faris Basharahil, director of Social Creatives, Singapore and Javid Alibhai, Under the Radar (Toronto)
  • Digital Mural Mapping – A virtual tour of some of Toronto’s murals and tips for best use of Google Maps and other software for creating your own map
  • Managers’ Corner - a roundtable, interactive session of issues and solutions for successful project management. (Requests for specific topics can be emailed to Karin Eaton)
  • Creative CollaborationThe Quilt Mosaic Project: a hands-on collaborative, creative, team building session, using non-woven media and a variety of materials such as stencils, sponges, acrylics, paint markers and more; using the butterfly as a symbol for the theme “Transformation/Migration”. Led by Serge Malenfant (MURIRS), with Redzuan Salleh (Artistic Manager, Social Creatives, Singapore), Rob Matejka (Mural Routes) & other fine artists (like YOU.)
  • Training in Mural Making – a toolkit of resources for curriculum development and implementation. Presented by graduates of Off the Wall: Leadership Training in Mural Making 2011
  • Getting to Know You - sharing session with highlights and new projects from all of the delegates
  • Mural dedications – Warden Woods Community Centre project and Mural Routes’ Youth mural project “Intersections.”
  • Displays and exhibit of artists’ portfolios and mural art projects

    Both symposium venues are easily accessible to public transit.

    Friday, October 28 - Day 1 venue:
    Toronto City Hall - Committee Room 2 100 Queen Street West, Toronto, ON M5H 2N3
    A short walk from Dundas or Queen Subway Stations. Plenty of paid parking in the parking garage under City Hall.

    Saturday, Oct. 29 & Sunday, Oct. 30 - Day 2/3 venue:
    Warden Woods Community Centre, 74 Firvalley Court, Scarborough, ON M1L 1N9

    Bus # 69 South from Warden Subway, stops beside the centre. The subway is a 10 minute walk.

    Reasonable accommodation rates can be found close to Saturday and Sunday sessions at Days Inn, Comfort Inn and Super 8 on Kingston Road in Scarborough (east Toronto), close to Warden Woods C.C.
    Direct bus to the Warden Subway stops near the Super 8 & Comfort Inn motels.
