The Cotton Industry Three Cotton Mills sustained the Cornwall economy from the 1880's until they closed in 1959. The demand for workers outpaced local population growth, stimulating immigration from Quebec. Unsafe working conditions prompted M.P. Dr. Darby Bergin to champion safety legislation. The mills were the second factory in Canada electrically lighted with a system designed by Thomas Edison.
