Five years after its initial implementation, the Kitchener Downtown Mural Programme can boast of four Murals that have been constructed in the downtown area.  The Kitchener Downtown Mural Programme, the organization behind the erection of these public masterpieces, is a community initiative supported by a volunteer board. Its mandate is to encourage participation, pride, education, partnership, ownership and tourism in Downtown Kitchener, and to play a part in its overall renewal.  As the Downtown changes its role from a retail district to a cultural district, the Downtown Mural Programme aims to enhance the integrity of Arts as an industry, and to foster an understanding and stewardship of the Downtown by involving businesses and the general public in the creation of these giant works of art.
