Occasionally, he would come across those who were slow in paying their taxes. In 1907 it was the Canadian Northern Railway Company who was refusing to pay. Sheriff Umbach decided to seize and chain the locomotive to the tracks the next time it stopped in town. He believed this would force the company to pay. The CN paid the overdue taxes and Sheriff Umbach released the train. Umbach is seen with the chain and padlock he used, which he had purchased from the Oppertshauser and Sons Hardware Store.
